Hungarian living room furniture: from kanapé to kandalló
This A1 deck teaches 35 Hungarian words for the living room. Each card shows the Hungarian word on the front and the English on the back, with audio on both sides. You walk through the room: after kanapé (sofa) and függöny (curtain) come kandalló (fireplace), távirányító (remote control) and tapéta (wallpaper).
Hungarian builds many furniture names as compound words: dohányzóasztal is literally a smoking table, our coffee table, and könyvespolc is a book shelf. The first five cards – kanapé (sofa), fotel (armchair), dohányzóasztal (coffee table), könyvespolc (bookshelf), szőnyeg (rug) – are free to try without registering, with audio.
Who it’s for
- English speakers at A1 level who want to describe a Hungarian home.
- Expats furnishing a flat and shopping for a szekrény (cabinet) or a lámpa (lamp).
- Teachers preparing a lesson on rooms and furniture.
What it’s good for
- Naming: telling a fotel (armchair) from a szék (chair).
- Describing: talking about your own room with tükör (mirror) and szőnyeg (rug).
- Listening: hearing each word, so the long compounds feel less daunting.
