Food and drink in Hungarian: dishes, spices and cooking verbs
This A2–C1 English–Hungarian deck covers the Hungarian kitchen: dishes such as pite (pie), pörkölt (stew), húsleves (broth), kolbász (sausage) and palacsinta (pancake), plus ingredients like dió (walnut), grépfrút (grapefruit) and libahús (goose, as meat). Cooking verbs come in the infinitive, as in dictionaries – pirítani (to sauté), buggyantani (to poach), pácolni (to marinate), dagasztani (to knead).
Try the first five cards – pie, rib, walnut, dessert, pancake – without registering. Note that pörkölt is a paprika-based meat dish that is not quite the same as an English stew, and that Hungarian has the long compound habverő (‘foam-beater’) for a whisk and szita for a sieve.
